A safety is a defensive shot. The goal is to force your opponent to commit a foul giving you ball in hand anywhere on the table. A safety is played for several reasons. If you don’t have a clear or remotely makeable shot on one of your balls, you might play a safety shot. If pocketing one of your balls would not benefit you later in the game, you might play a safety shot. In a nutshell, a safety shot is a legal shot in which you purposefully intend to give the table over to your opponent. A shot is considered legal when the cue ball first contacts a ball in your group and then either the cue ball or any object ball must contact a cushion afterwards. You want to leave your opponent the hardest possible situation on a safety shot. There are three main things that you are trying to accomplish with a safety. You want to give your opponent the longest shot possible. You want to try and freeze the cue ball up against a cushion or another ball. Also, you want to try to place an interfering ball between the cue ball and your opponent’s ball if possible. If you think about these three things, you’ll notice your defensive play will increase dramatically. Remember, the whole point is to get ball in hand.

Basically it is a defensive shot. By rule you only have to call a safety if you intend to legally pocket one of your suit of balls and give up your turn and the table back to your opponent. Generally players will tell their opponent if the intend to play a defensive shot even if they do not intend to pocket a ball just to let them know what they are doing. Of course unless there is a high possibility of a no hit and you wish to have someone watch the shot, you do not have to call “safety”.

A safety is when there is no intent to pocket the ball.
