Swimming pool safety technologies go high-tech
Remember when you were growing up and you could just go and jump into the pool because pool fences weren’t mandatory? Even though swimming pool accidents and drownings are still too common, before the mandatory requirement of having to have swimming pool fences and locks, the incidences were even higher.
Today you can’t install a pool without having a plan to install a swimming pool fence – in fact many municipalities require them to meet certain minimum levels of security – from fencing to pool alarms. Even with fencing alone, an inquisitive child can find a way to scale it and fall into the pool if it is unsupervised.
Technological advances have moved security measures well beyond the chain link fence stage and have lead many pool owners to look at their pools and security in a different way. There are measures on the market that take both pet and child safety into consideration.
Even if you’ve installed a fence you should still look into installing other safety measures such as infrared motion detectors, in fact this type of security is being used in most pools and in some communities, it is required before a pool will pass inspection with authorities. The infrared motion detectors sense when the light beam has been broken and sounds an alarm. These detectors can be set with various levels of sensitivity so you would want to experiment to get the correct setting as you don’t want a leaf falling into the pool to set off the detector.
You can use a floating security device that’s equipped with motion sensors. These devices are typically battery operated and, again they sense when there is movement upon the water that is different from that of the movement of the water from its motion from the water circulation technologies.
Many pool owners are getting turned onto the idea of installing motion-activated cameras; they work on the same premise as motion activated lights. The cameras can be programmed to either sweep the swimming pool area and constantly monitor motion or they can be programmed to activate once motion is detected in the area. The cameras are typically connected to a television monitor or computer in a central location in the house and could be equipped with an alarm as well.
No matter what kind of high-tech devices you install, you still want to have a pool fence installed. No matter what kind of security you install, there is no substitute for constant vigilance and supervision when your children or pets are around the swimming pool.
