The door was locked, but I found a side entrance via the spa. The security guard, Steve, who rousted me out was very nice but didn’t want to lose his job by being flexible. It turns out some kid had "an accident" in the pool yesterday, and they are fixing it now with extra chlorine. I’m sure he would have been glad to have me sign a release, but the hotel doesn’t have such a release available, he told me. There simply is no service option to fit *my* risk profile, which is that I could stand a little extra chlorine in exchange for my regular morning swim. [Nikolaj, I'm really sorry I'll miss your talk, but they're hoping to have it open again later this morning....]
FWIW - slightly in connection with the B-school hullaballoo - the hotel would be perfectly within its rights to ban me from the premises henceforth, though I think that would be a stupid decision. I was willing to take the risk of not following their rules….and they do have a right to be arbitrary.
