Q&A: Parents, on pool safety?

Parents, on pool safety?
How many of you have a pool in your backyard? What safety precautions are there to make sure children don’t get in?
Did you have a pool as a child? Do you recall the safety precautions your parents had in place?
My pool now is about 4′4″ high, I have a ladder like this one http://images.bizrate.com/resize?sq=500&uid=902362111 and when it’s not in use, we put a padlock through the hole so that you can’t put the side back down.
As a child, our pool was about 3′ high and when the ladder wasn’t in use my parents would take it out of the pool and put it up against the house.

Answer by Aesa is Chasin’ Mason!
We don’t have one now, but as you may remember, we’re moving soon, and my husband is stuck on getting a house with a pool. But we’ve discussed it, and it will have to be set up so that we can install one of those screen type fences so that even if Mason got out onto the patio, he wouldn’t be able to get near the pool…. A lot of houses that we’ve looked at have already had something like that installed.

We have a pool. It has a locked gate.
We had a pool when I was a child. There were no safety precautions.
We have an inground pool. There is a 8 foot wide concrete walkway all around and there is a fence all around the perimeter of the walkway. We also installed a pool cover that remains over it whenever it’s not in use. The gate to the fence around it is kept locked.
Yes, we had a pool as a child and the safety precautions were similar, minus the pool cover.

Our town requires backyard pools to be both fenced in and locked. We had an above ground pool as a kid. There was a deck attached to it and a gate with a lock.
Yes. A locked gate.
No.
A community pool? Have fun swimming in urine.
We have a pool on our back lanai. The door handles that lead out there are out of our children’s reach and are always locked. From inside the house they would have to get through a baby gate and two locked doors to get to it. We also have an alarm system on the window and doors that lead out there. It still freaks me out sometimes though!
Add: I didn’t have a pool as a child.
I don’t have a pool. But my parents do. They have an in ground pool. They have a four foot metal gate around the pool. The gate locks just by closing it. And it does not stay open unless you hold it open. And their is a rule that no child (I have two kids and my sister has four) is to go outside in the backyard without an adult. And going outside without an adult will bar you from swimming that day.
They got the pool when I was in the fifth grade and my sister was in the eighth. We both were very good swimmers by then so we didn’t really need any safety precautions. But my mother did insist that we tell her when we were going swimming so she could monitor us.
I don’t have a pool and I didn’t know anyone as a kid that had one. My coworker her mother has a pool and it is just open . It is one of those above ground deals but they are putting in an in ground one right now. She has told me that she and other family members often go buy and if her parents are not home just go swiming because it is just open. I think they are putting up a fence around the new one so animals won’t be able to go right up but it will still be pretty much open to any adult who wants to go back there . Its not in the “back yard” per sey. Her parents have a lot of land so the pool is like a 8 min walk from the house

My father sells this(we’re placing swimmingpools). I’m sure there’s a company out there that can make you one.(I live in Belgium so no option :p).
my MIL has a gate on her deck and has an above ground pool and after everyone enjoyed a swim last year and we were on the deck having a bbq and no one locked the gate and everyone turned and said OMG as my 2 yr old had climbed the ladder and jumped in the pool, they now take the ladder out after every use.
I have never seen my husband move so fast, he jumped off the deck, took a step and jumped in the pool at the same time as my toddler. Thank god.
My 2 yr old could swim without a life jacket and prob could have made it to the ladder but we didn’t take that risk. Lesson learned and I will never buy a pool.
We did at our old house, but I am against having one at this house until our kids are older. We had an incident when our oldest was 3 years old… we had some relatives over and everyone was away from the pool, but I guess some people went over to check it out or something because Josh wandered across the yard to it and indecently someone did not properly close and lock the gate. He fell in, and thankfully my husband heard a distant splash and ran over, jumped in with all his clothes on and saved him from drowning. My heart still races whenever I think about it. All I can say is, little kids and water.. you can never be too careful!!
I have an indoor pool. The doors are always locked when my husband or I aren’t in there.
My parents did have a pool but it was outdoors, they had a fence around the patio where the pool was and wouldnt lift us over if they wern’t there.
I have a pool at my house, and since I’m a parent, I’m always cautious about kids going near the pool. Vigilance is the best way to prevent a drowning, and a pool alarm plays a big part in that. My pool alarm system includes pool gate alarms, door alarms, voice alarms, floating/wave sensors alarm, and a pool-mounted passive infra-red motion for ultimate security. At first I used a fence and a pool cover, but I was afraid that wasn’t enough, and now I’m much more at ease after installing my pool alarms. You can never be too be careful!
